The Pope encourages medicine that combines knowledge and compassion!

Receiving an audience of some fifty members of the Rome Bio-Medical Campus Foundation in the Clementine Hall of the Apostolic Palace on Monday, October 18, Pope Francis advocated Catholic medicine placing human dignity at its center, deploring the attitude of some health professionals who seek profit above all else.

“I am happy to meet you in person on the very day on which we celebrate Saint Luke, whom the apostle Paul calls “the dear doctor” (Col 4, 14)”. In front of the members of the Roman foundation, Pope Francis praised the work in the field in health, "especially when the emphasis is placed not only on assistance", but also "on research to provide patients with the therapies the most suitable, and above all if it is done with love for the person".

"The sick comes before the disease"

Putting the sick person before the disease is essential in all areas of medicine, the Sovereign Pontiff well recalled, considering this aspect “fundamental” for a “ really complete, truly human” treatment .

“The centrality of the person, which underlies your commitment in care, but also in teaching and research, helps you to reinforce a unified and synergistic vision ”, affirmed the bishop of Rome. " A vision that does not put forward ideas, techniques and projects, but the concrete man, the patient, who must be taken care of by meeting his story, learning about his experience, establishing friendly relations that heal the heart. Love for man, especially in his condition of fragility, in which the image of Jesus crucified shines through, is specific to Christian reality and must never be lost”.
