Francis urges caregivers to be “merciful like the Father”!
Adelaide Patrignani - Vatican CityIn this year 2022, the World Day of the Sick will mark an anniversary: it will be the thirtieth edition, since its institution by Saint John Paul II.Pope Francis salutes “the steps forward” taken by the local Churches in the field of health for three decades, while recognizing “a long road” still to be traveled, especially in the face of poverty and in the field of pastoral accompaniment.
In his message , dated last December 10 and made public on January 4, the Holy Father indicates a verse of Saint Luke to guide this Day: “Be merciful, as your Father is merciful” (Lk 6, 36).
Mercy, a strong theme of the current pontificate, "is, par excellence, the name of God", recalls the Pope, evoking both "the dimension of fatherhood and that of motherhood". God "is both strength and tenderness", and the supreme witness of this merciful love is the Son.Jesus, the Gospels tell us, set out to heal the sick, and this attention soon became “the principal work within the framework of the mission of the apostles” .
